Get Laid Archives

Been Laid Off? What Now?

Lou Clark asked:

In this economy I am sure everyone knows someone who has been laid off as organizations downsize, close down or re-organize. Not everyone will react to being laid off in the same way with some seeing this as a blessing in disguise and others suffering from a crisis of confidence. Whatever the comfort level there are a number of recommended steps to take to regain control and confidence and develop successful job search strategies.

Step 1

Take 2/3 days off. This may sound strange as all you think you should be doing is getting out there and finding reassurance that you have work but what you actually need is time to refuel and re-energize and get yourself back on track. Searching for a new position or career can be an emotionally and physically challenging time so take time out to be prepared.

Step 2

Check in with your confidence levels. Being laid off can be a blow to your self confidence even if you know that it wasn’t personal. Even if this isn’t immediately obvious, low self confidence can affect the quality of your resume, your ability to deliver a good interview and ultimately your success in the job market. I recommend using a simple resume review technique to test your personal and professional confidence levels.

Exercise – Read through your resume and write out 2 or 3 success stories for each position you have held. Make sure your success stories include the challenge or problem you faced, the actions that you took, the results / successes that you had and finally note the skills and strengths that these success stories show that you have.

How easy did you find this? If this was more difficult than you thought then seek out a friend, mentor or professional career coach to brainstorm with you to identify your key success stories.

Step 3

Clarify your next steps, set a realistic timeline (e.g. how long will for finances support you out of work) and finally be realistic in your choice of next steps. Easy? I didn’t think so!

When you have been laid you really have 3 main paths to take -

A – Stay in the same industry doing the same job

B – Stay in the same industry doing a different job

C – Do something completely new and different

Whatever decision you make you will need to check in to review how realistic that option is. For example, if you worked as a Trader for Bear Sterns and wanted to do the same job in the same industry I would recommend doing some research into how realistic it would be to get a trading position within your required timeline. Or another example, you worked as a Trader for Bear Sterns and now want to set up your own business as a plumber – you again would need to review how realistic this is. What resources, training, funding would you need? How soon can you be working and does this fit my timeline? Be realistic.

If this process becomes overwhelming then contact a qualified career coach to help you sift through your thoughts and brainstorm about the next steps.

Step 4

Now you have assessed your decision, know your timeline for success and feel confident you are on a realistic path toward your ideal professional life, you need to set an action plan and stick to it! Here are 7 questions to get you started.

? What marketing materials do you need? (resume, website, biography?)

? Who do you know who you need to re-connect and network with? (old school friends, teachers, bosses, former colleagues)

? Who do you not know who you want to connect or network with? (review linked-in and identify companies to want to work for or businesses you want to align with)

? Who is doing what you do and how did they get into it? (competitors)

? What resources are available to help you? (recruiters, networking companies)

? What obstacles do you see might get in your way and how can you plan ways to overcome them now? (time, family pressures, job market)

? How will you know you have been successful? (I will have a job, I will have met 20 new people)

If this process becomes overwhelming then contact a qualified career coach to help you sift through your thoughts and brainstorm about the next steps.

First Practical, Step-by-Step Blueprint for Talking and Flirting with Women No Matter If You?re Short, Old, Ugly, Flat-Broke, or Get Less Action Than a 40-Year Old Virgin!

Patricia Kagwiria Makhulo asked:

$800 tax rebates, Stimilus packages, Billion dollar bailouts…Is that the Cure for being laid off? Will it heal and abate recession woes? Recession, Job Cuts, Downsizing, Outsourcing…These are all words that we dread, they were the Buzz Words of 2008! Ask the voters in Michigan…they know a thing or two Look at the Detroit lions 0 and 16! And yet you are fired could very well the best word uttered! Gone are the days of working for the same company, great pension at the end of it all. But this is not news! I didn’t expect to be out of a job! I worked in the service industry (a teen counselor), so it wasn’t a question of need. There will always be an opportunity to work with children. When it came to dedication, punctuality, being able to perceive the need even before it arose…I was your girl! I was and continue to be the dream employee…in before the rest, last one to leave and always at work!
I didn’t think I would be the one to get the axe, few people believe it will happen to them. And when it does, the effect can be crashing and crushing! But is doesn’t have to be! It wasn’t so much that I was laid off as it was a realization for me that I could do better and the opportunity had just presented itself in a manner I had not anticipated! What a blessing, what a God send! I was able to make ends meet through an alternative stream of income that I had been establishing via the home-based business industry. I often asked myself why I was the one that got axed…and I know you are too. I came to the understanding that I had to go because I was the most resourceful of my cohorts. If anyone could make I could. And so can you. In my heart, I knew that there was a very bright light at the end of the tunnel. Things would get better sooner rather than later. One early November morning (2007), at precisely 3:00am MST, I woke knowing precisely and clearly the course of action I needed to pursue! Clear in my mind were the words Internet Marketing for Financial Freedom. The excitement I felt and vision of what was going to be cannot be quantified. (It should be noted that I had been doing research for while…inspiration like success does not happen overnight, but one night it does happens)! You see my alternative stream of income came from coaching others relative to being successful working from home, in their home based business…I had taken some intensive courses and learned a great deal about internet marketing, enough that I could guide others that were struggling. I had some online presence, and a very enterprising lady discovered me so to speak. No I did not end up working with her, but she set me on the path for the adventure of a lifetime! Now I get to work from home! What I love best is I don’t have to worry about getting fired! Funny thing, I fire myself at least twice a month (there are days I get lazy and become the mediocre employee that everyone dreads)! I find that I am also very kind and gracious and so I end up re-hiring myself after many promises of me bringing my A game! Well did Henry David Thoreau write, when he said, “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. The foundation for my success has been laid. I will not have to attend a job interview again. I will never have to persuade someone to hire me or give me a chance. I love to work from home! I will, as a woman, never have to worry about security again. I look forward to one day joining the ranks of Work/Stay-At-Home-Moms (meaning having a child)! How thankful I am for being fired! Indeed internet marketing for financial freedom! Following are 5 specific steps that virtually ANYONE can courageously follow to achieve internet marketing success: 1. Get started in a product oriented internet marketing business and not a service oriented business. 2. Get an internet marketing mentor, and if they are a techy even better (one who is making an income of $5000 thousand/monthly on the internet and therefore will be a good mentor). 3. Develop yourself to the tune of at least 10 hours a week learning things you don’t know about internet marketing (Much better than the 40-40-40 club you know 40 hour/week, $40,000/yr for 40 years)! 4. Use powerful systems along with your instincts and hard work – (Wasn’t Einstein the one who defined madness as doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results?) Give yourself permission to think outside the box). 5. Don’t turn around once you make the commitment and the results will change your life as you know it in a short period of time. Give your family the positioning you all deserve by taking your life out of your employer’s hands and stepping into the world of internet marketing while it is still a ground floor opportunity. You have my commitment to assisting you in achieving great success. Are You Laid Off? Tips to Survive it

Geetika Jain asked:

With the global recession spreading its tentacles and gulping jobs like a monstrous glutton, there is no dearth of people being handed pink slips across the globe. Job losses are piling up and there are more jobs to be cut in the future. In this gloomy scenario, people are frantically looking for ways to cope with the situation. For some the lay offs were expected while for a few others, it is nothing less than a bolt from the blue. They always thought that their jobs were safe and there was no reason to worry. However, lay offs are a reality today and have to be dealt with in a way that leads out of this quandary and not mess up the mind further.

A job loss can be a devastating even in anyone’s life and if you have been one of the unlucky ones, it is quite understandable that you are feeling down in the dumps. But that will not help as you need to have an action plan in place to bail you out of this situation. If you have a helpful plan in place, you would be able to recover quickly. And that is the best thing that you can do instead of just feeling depressed.

Firstly, keep the panic at bay. While worrying is quite normal, make sure it does not hamper your will to recover out of this situation. A job is not everything in life and not the only thing that proves your worth. So, while you may have lost the job for now, you still have all those skills with you that made you successful in your job. Also, you can read up and find more about all those people who were once laid off from their job but went on to attain success in life. Keep in touch with your skills and make sure you don’t let any situation lessen your skills.
If you have been laid off, a steady pay Cheque at the end of the month is no more a possibility, so take a tab of your finances. Reassess your spending habits. Weed out all expenses on the luxurious indulgences. You would do well by listing your monthly expenditure into 2 sub-heads- indispensable and optional. Now that you are eating out of your savings, you need to eliminate all optional expenditure for a while. Control the urge to shop instinctively or eat out often or spending on domestic staff, if any.

However, if you are only expecting a lay off as your company has started firing people in other departments and you could be next in line, you need to plan your finances meticulously. Pile up enough cash for yourself to last you at least three months without having to break into any of your savings for the future. This way you will have enough buffer to survive on while you look for another job. Also, most companies offer a severance package at the time of a lay off, you would do well by judiciously making use of that money.

Next important thing to do is to update your resume on all job sites. Take a stock of all the newly acquired skills in your last job and include all the assignments that you undertook in the resume. Now should be the time when you frantically start looking for a job. Get in touch with all friends and acquaintances in your network who might help you get a job. Make them aware that you are looking for work and with your kind of skill sets, what jobs you might be interested in doing. Send your resume to the HR departments of companies that might still be hiring. In such times, it is a common norm that candidates are hired for lesser than their last salaries. You cannot possibly debate or question it. So, be ready to accept a job even if for a lesser salary. At least that will keep the monthly cash flow lubricated.

Another interesting thing that many people opt for after a lay off is enhancing their qualifications and skill sets. So, you could consider going back to studies. Take up course that you have long wanted to do if your finances allow that kind of a liberty. If your spouse is working and can keep the kitchen fires burning for a while, it might not be a bad idea to reconsider studying and augmenting your qualification. This way, when the job market picks up again, you would be ready to be accepted immediately. But make sure that you study something career-related only and don’t get into hobby classes that will not add to the value of your CV at all.

The most important trick to deal with a lay off is to not get depressed by the negative thinking spiral. Your situation is very vulnerable right now so ensure you do all that is required to keep the spirits up. If good times didn’t last, bad times wouldn’t last either. So, think less about the job loss and more about how to get out of this loss.

How a Former Stuttering, Shy Nerd Cracked the Code to Flirting with Women and Creating Sexual Attraction…

Li Ming Wong asked:

In today’s society, it seems as if layoffs are increasing in popularity. Lay offs are something that you can regularly hear about in the news. As more businesses are forced to downsize, you may find yourself laid off from your current position. This layoff may be permanent or temporary; it often depends on the needs and current state of your employer. Either way, should you find yourself laid off, you will want to continue reading on.

When it comes to layoffs one of the most commonly asked questions is “what should I do?” In all honesty, there is actually a lot that you can do. For starters, you will want to first examine your state’s laws on unemployment. While there are some variations, you will find that most states award unemployment compensation to those who are laid off from their jobs. This may be able to help you and your family out financially in the short-term run.

In keeping with unemployment, it is important that you examine it. Unfortunately, there are many individuals who view this money as a handout or money that they do not need. What you need to remember about unemployment is that it is designed for individuals just like you. If you are laid off from work, you should find that you are entitled to unemployment, especially if you did not receive any severance pay or compensation in another form.

Even if you do seek unemployment payments, it is still important to remember that they will not last forever. Unemployment compensation is designed to work as a temporary fix. That is why you will want to start taking action to help you find a new job, possibly the sooner the better. The first step in doing this involves creating a resume for yourself. You can either create your own resume or you can hire a professional resume writer to do the job for you. Either way, you will want to ensure that your resume is one that will turn company heads.

Once you have a resume in hand, you should then start examining all open job positions in your area. When doing so, you should either use your local newspaper or the internet. Career job searching websites are a nice and easy way to find and apply for jobs online. For your own safety, you will want to refrain from giving your personal information, especially your bank account information or social security number, to any companies that you have never heard of before or companies that you are unable to research online.

If you were employed at your last position, before being laid off, for two or more years, you may be a little bit nervous about finding a new job. If this is a feeling that you are experiencing, you should know that you are not alone. Finding a new job can be a stressful process, especially when it comes time for a job interview. That is why you may want to consider doing a few practice interviews with your friends or family members. They can ask you common interview questions, such as your strengths and weaknesses, as well as why you want to work for that particular company. This practice, if done enough, can help to reduce the nervousness often associated with job interviews. You may also find that you are able to give better answers, as well as answer all questions in a timely matter at your next interview.

If you are unsuccessful in your job search, you may want to consider seeking professional assistance. This assistance can come for your state’s labor department or a professional recruiter or career agent. Of course the decision is yours to make, but you may want to try and avoid your local temporary employment agencies. If you are able to secure unemployment compensation, you will want to spend your time looking for and applying for secure, long-term job openings.

Over 40 and Laid Off?

Craig Nathanson asked:

Do nothing

Probably not the first piece of advice you would expect to get!

When you are laid off, the range of emotions you feel can be overwhelming. You become your own worst critic, and you start coming up with all the reasons why you lost the job. At home, you hear more of this from your family members, although maybe not so directly.

You feel like a failure. Your self-esteem is has taken a hit, and you feel depressed and a little lost. You feel angry and you’re not sure what to do about it. You rush forward into a new job search, and related frantic activity….

Stop — wrong approach.

Instead, take some time for reflection. Chances are you didn’t even like this job or the work itself. Privately, you are a little excited to be free of this job prison, although you would not admit this to anyone right now.

This is the time to get away. It may be for a few days, or maybe a few weeks. Do nothing during this time except think deeply about what you want out of your life and what activities bring you the most joy. This is a rare space of time to think seriously about who you are, and where you want to make a contribution. Don’t lose this opportunity.

Forget about money

Sure, your immediate concerns probably revolve around how to pay next month’s bills. Ideally, you tap into other resources to buy time. After 40, we need more time than money.

There is probably nothing you can do in the next two weeks that will make a difference in the short term. Instead of working on your resume, make a money plan to get you through the next 1-3 months.

This is a rare opportunity in your life to really invest the time to think.

What work MUST emerge through you now? No external job description will ever get this right for you. This must come from you. Where do you most want to make a contribution in the world right now? Why is this important to you?

This is the MOST important question you must answer about your life and the reason you are here.

Get educated

Once you have defined what you are really passionate about, it’s time to get educated.

Who is doing the work you most want to do? Read everything you can. The more you read, the more inspired you will get. Eventually, you may choose to embark on some formal education, but for now simply gather enough data to help you feel good about your choice of work.

When you are working at and learning about what you love, and what really interests you, you won’t be able to tell the difference between work and play. Soon, your vocation will become a lifelong vacation.

Instead, most of us just work at jobs. The difference between our jobs and the rest of our lives is very clear. Your life can be better than this!

Brand yourself

Whether you decide to work for yourself or others, the process should be the same. What are exactly your best gifts, and what do you enjoy most? What kind of services or products can you create and sell to others using your unique gifts?

What are the features and benefits of what you will offer? What is the perfect niche audience for you and your products and services?

Let’s say, for example, that you like to design art work. You think, “Who would buy what I love to do most?” You think a little deeper, and realize that you could design cost-effective restaurant menus that would draw people to the restaurants. Your menus would feature specials, ingredients, and customer reviews. Restaurant owners would benefit as customers would learn more about their eateries, and what they have to offer. Then another thought hits: you could write a newsletter, displaying your brand, targeted at restaurant owners giving advice on how to brand their restaurants!

You decide to call this business “Creative menus”. You are off and running.

This same logic works whether you love to help animals or design software. The reason we are seeing so many layoffs today in corporate America is that most organizations don’t know how to develop entrepreneurial thinking or entice creativity inside their businesses.

Make a plan

Write down your vision of your perfect vocational day. Without this vision, you will have no motivation to move forward. Most people don’t change anything in their lives until the pain of not changing becomes greater than the initial discomfort associated with changing.

Most people look for jobs in an illogical way. They look for them! Most jobs were not designed for you in the first place.

You spend days and months networking, hoping a Job will come to you. The job probably will come to you eventually, but it will quickly look like the last job prison you were in.

There is a strong tendency to go back to what we did before, ONLY because it was familiar and we were good at it. After 40, it becomes critical to avoid this trap.

First define a plan, and steps to create for what you want. Then you will know where to look, and how to start building exactly what would be perfect for you.

Laid off recently?

Congratulations! You have a unique, perhaps once in a lifetime, opportunity to get to know yourself better and to ask better questions of yourself. Be careful what you ask, because the work you choose to do can determine the kind of person you become.

Take that pink slip and run to the nearest beach for reflection and peace. This is the best gift you can give yourself now.

Benefits Of Having A Driveway Laid

Gen Wright asked:

y is a private road that leads to ones home and is owned by an individual because he maintains it from time to time.

Laying down a driveway will help solve problems where water builds up because of poor drainage systems and makes you as an individual to enjoy a smooth drive way off the main road into your home compound.

Different Types of Driveways

Asphalt Driveway:-They are the cheapest driveways to create, because they are easier to make. A pile of stones is placed at the place you want the driveway then tar is poured on top of it.

Concrete Driveway:-This type of driveway is made by piling stones at the place you want the driveway to be then cement is poured on top. The cement is then smoothed and left to dry. The stones remain compact due to the cement therefore creating a Cement Driveway.

Block paving:-They are the most attractive because they are made by hand just the same way bricks are laid down. They are arranged to form a beautiful pattern and at the same time a compact driveway.

As much as this appears to be the type of job that one can handle; it is advisable to seek help from professionals because they can do it well and are not expensive. It will even be cheaper for the professional to get materials for use at a lower price than an individual. The professionals also get quality material as compared to what can be sold to you.

Before hiring any professionals, you should try a domestic research around your estate or area to get the best and experienced man power to lay the driveway, you might end up selecting any only to get the worst driveway but very expensive.

Why you should have a driveway

A driveway does not allow weed to grow around it and one will avoid the trouble of water draining in the grass and causing environmental problems. The materials used in building the driveway cannot sink or collapse at any time; they are usually simple but stronger, they are also long lasting as long they are used for the right purpose. They come in very different colours and patterns to meet your demands and therefore they can make your driveway to look beautiful and splendid.

You will be able to protect your cars because most driveways are built in a manner to prevent oil and other chemicals from damaging your car. A driveway is quite easy to maintain, once you have used a professional in building it and the materials of standard quality, you can be sure of the driveway lasting long without doing any repairs. Should there be any problem then it is also easy to do repairs.

They are cheap to build yet very attractive. You can have a design of your choice provided you are in a position to pay for its labour and get the materials needed to build it. Shop for the best, professional and responsible people to put up your drive way and you’ll never regret spending your money, but always take care of frauds!

How To Create Instant Attraction With Any Woman

Laid Off or Fired : Now What?

Jim Willis asked:

So….you’ve been laid-off, fired, whatever you want to call it. A mix of harsh emotions are probably stirring around inside you. So, what should you do now? First, realize this may be a dream come true. Seriously, every time I’ve been fired or laid-off, it’s ended up being a blessing in disguise. I’ve always ended up in a new position that either pays more or is a lot more fun than the old career.

First things first, adjust your attitude. This is no time to feel sorry for yourself. There is more opportunity in this country than you may know. Open your mind to opportunities you may not have ever considered. For example, just because you’ve been an accountant for 10 years, doesn’t necessarily mean you must find an accounting position. Maybe you’d do well in a sales position or get into pest control. You could always use your accounting skills as a freelancer in the evenings to keep those skills polished. So, look at this layoff as an opportunity! Your ex-employer may well have given you a blessing in disguise!

Let’s take care of some things right away, before you even start a job search. Apply for unemployment. Have no guilt about it. Unemployment is not a gift from the government. It’s not welfare. Your past employer has been paying into an unemployment account to cover you should this layoff happen to you. Claim it…it’s yours! No reason to feel guilty about it. In some cases, you can apply over the phone. The US Department of Labor is a good place to start. Note….state laws vary, but unemployment generally starts after your last payment from your former employer; so if you received a severance package, don’t expect to receive your first unemployment check until that severance package ends.

If your former employer provided health benefits, you should begin shopping for health insurance. Sure, your employer has offered you Cobra, but you want to drop that as soon as you can. It is too expensive. If you shop around, you can find reasonable coverage at a reasonable cost. Do not take this lightly, especially if you have children! Check out eHealthInsurance for some good coverage and fair coverages.

Your next step should be to update or write a good resume. There’s isn’t room in this article to go into all the details and tricks to writing an effective resume. Try to keep the resume down to one or two pages. Too much detail can put off potential employers. Employers want to be able to get a quick overview, not read a book. Try to emphasize your skills, not every detail of each job you’ve held. If you want to put together the most effective resume, check out Resume Rabbit. I’ve used the before and they were very effective.

One trend you may find in our current economic scene is employers laying off employees only to replace them with contract employees. Companies will do this for a couple of reasons. The employer doesn’t need to provide contract employees with benefits and doesn’t need to contribute income taxes. If a contract employee isn’t working out, the employer simply tells the contractor there services are no longer needed and finds another contractor. No counseling is required, no documentation. This trend could provide an opportunity for you. Check with temp agencies. Who knows, you might find yourself in the position you were laid off from!

Another option for you to consider in internet marketing. I currently hold a full time position, but have worked part time to eventually match my current salary, just with internet marketing. I don’t live beyond my current salary’s means. Just put the internet marketing money in the bank. So, what I’ve done is insulate myself from a potential layoff. I no longer fear being fired! I’ll be writing articles soon on how to make money on the internet. So, stay tuned.

So, to summarize…keep your head held high. See this as an opportunity, not a bummer. Apply for that unemployment…it’s yours! Shop for health insurance…dump the Cobra. Get that resume written sooner than later. Check with temp agencies. You may find some immediate work that will help make ends meet while you search for a new career. And look into internet marketing. It’s getting bigger and bigger!

Best of luck to you!

Laid Off: 5 Things You Must Do to Move on

tanas17 asked:

I was laid off in July 2001. At the height of my career, I was drawing a six figure annual income. I was the Country Sales Manager of one of the leading pharmaceutical company. When I was asked to meet with the Managing Director and the Human Resource Director one fine morning, I instinctively knew all is not well. My fear was confirmed when they told me that my position is now redundant due to the company’s recent merger. This is cruel as I have a young daughter and my wife was not on any pay roll. I was the sole bread winner.

Seven years on, I still hold a job, I have a small company started with two other friends and now I am also an online entrepreneur. Looking back, I can declare that being laid off is not being written off and you can have the courage to change things and you must. Right now, you don’t have to hide in a hole but rather this is the time to take action, massive action. Here are five very important steps you must take to exorcise the demon called retrenchment:

OVERCOME THE INITIAL SHOCK AS FAST AS YOU CAN

I have heard stories of denial, shock and some who just could not accept it. There are people who don’t even want to tell their spouse, they just continue with their daily routine as though nothing has happened. They would go to the park or shopping area and go back home at the usual time.

Taking a few days off is fine, it should help to recompose yourself. I know it is an not easy time, but you must let your ‘moaning’ last only for a very short season. The faster you get over this stage, the faster you can move on. Focus your thoughts on the future and let the past go. You can. You don’t deserve to have a stalled life.

GET ORGANIZED AND START CUTTING COST

Once you are settled down from the unpleasant encounter, start getting organized. Make a “to do list” every day. Start your search for jobs and interviews. Go www.trimedsg.com and my online business at www.simplyrichsg.com/tns. I want to put it here so that you know my own story is for real.

Robert Scheller said “Tough times never last. Tough people do”. How true it is. Your tough time will never outlast you. You can beat this retrenchment demon, but you must take massive action and in the end it will be alright. Set the motion going now! Stay focus and never, never waver. My best wishes to you and when you do feel down as all humans do, once in a while, remember you are never alone. God bless.

get laid

Kim Seipel asked:

Lost your job?  More people than ever before are successfully launching their own business after being laid off.  The downturn doesn’t necessarily translate into less need for your skills.  The work still needs to be done, and is often outsourced to private contractors.

Solution: You be that private contractor!  Start your own business and run your company from a nearby professional office space for as little as $99/Month!

Here are a few tips to launch you on a path to success:

o Stay out of your home.  Your house is not a good place to look for work or start your own business.  There are too many disruptions and temptations, not to mention the “depressing” factor.

o Go back to a professional/stimulating work environment immediately.  Whether you sign-up for a Virtual office plan, or decide to use a co-working, or shared office space facility, you should surround yourself with other professionals to feel empowered and focus on your career goals.

o Network, Network, Network.  Your goal is to maximize opportunities to bump into other professionals in a normal workplace situation, not just to discuss your own job hunting.  Talk with consultants and startups – not just with contacts at large companies that you’re targeting for a job. Word of mouth is KING!  Offer to work as a part-time consultant for a small or medium size business, or offer to work for free for a period of time.  “Working for free” doesn’t sound very appealing, but remember, this is just part of your strategy.   This experience will allow you to beef up your resume and who knows what else it can lead to?

o Consider starting a consulting business.  Even if it’s just temporary, starting a consulting business can allow you part-time or contract work.  The market can remain troublesome for awhile, and small to medium firms need help all the time.

Things to consider:

o Working at the library or at Starbucks brings you out of the home but are NOT good places to network.

o Co-working allows you to use a vacant office at a moderate price with a company that has excess space. Google “co-working” in your area to find a list of co-working spaces in your area.

In many cases, the virtual office provider can answer your calls, patch callers to your cell phone or home phone, and help project that “you are in business.”  Google “Virtual Office” and “Incubators” for a list of providers in your area.

o The company I work for, Pacific Business Centers, is offering Virtual offices at $99/month to anyone that has lost their job within the last 3 months. Abhishek Agarwal asked:

In the rapidly changing world of today, the concept of layoff is gradually gaining popularity. They are constantly on the news almost every other day. As businesses are beginning to downsize, this has become a huge phenomenon. So, don’t worry if you find yourself being laid off from your work. Layoff may be temporary or permanent depending on the nature of work and the business. It depends on the position of the employer and needs of the company. Presented here, in this article are the tips which you might find useful if you are one among the thousands who has been laid off from work.

The most frequently asked question with regards to lay off is what you ought to do if you have been laid off from work! To know what has to be done, you need to first know what your state law says about layoffs and unemployment. Very often the state offers compensation to people who have been laid off from their jobs which can help you support your family and take care of your needs at least to a certain extent.

It is very important to examine your state of unemployment. Regrettably, there are many people who consider the compensation money as something which is not needed by them. You would come under the unemployed cadre especially if you have been laid off from your job and if you haven’t received any form of compensation.

Another thing to be kept in mind is that the unemployment compensation which you would receive would not last forever. Hence, it is considered best to look out for a new job as soon as possible if you have been laid off from work. The initial step to be taken in this regard is to prepare a resume. You can get this work done either through a professional resume preparing person or by yourself. In any way you do it, your focus should be on creating an impact in the new company.

Once you are done with the resume preparation, you can look for all the job positions that are vacant according to your qualifications and experience. You can use the internet or the newspaper for this purpose to help you. Job vacancy websites are also a good option which you can use. They are very simple and easy and also help in saving time. However, for individual interest, you must make sure that you do not disclose any kind of personal information in such portals such as social security number or bank account information etc.

Finding a new place to work can be a very stressful and tiring. However, you have to remember that you are not the only person but you are one among thousands of other people like you. You can use the free time you have to prepare for interviews and by going through frequently asked questions and other related stuff. If you practice enough for these, you can face the interview without any sort of nervousness. Your experience is an added advantage. With enough practice, you will find yourself giving better and more apt answers to questions asked even before attending the interview.

You can also go for professional guidance if you have not been successful in finding the right job. You can seek the help of a professional recruiter or a career agent or a jobber or contractor for this purpose. You can also search for opportunities in a place out of your city for increased exposure. The unemployment compensation can be fruitfully used for such purposes.
